Well. That sucked. Sydney Crosby got into a little fight defending Malkin. That’s great, but one question remains: why? That’s not his job. I love to see guys having each other’s back, but lets leave it up to the goons who get payed to do that. Sid’s too valuable to sit in the sin bin for 5 minutes. The Pens thoroughly out-played the Panthers for a period. Unfortunately, we still were tied 1-1 at the end of it. Then, we just died. We lost every battle for the puck, we lost the puck possession advantage, and we eventually lost the game. I’m not sure if that was fatigue because of playing less than 24 hours after another game 3 states away, or if that was fatigue because of the physically taxing system (remember my first worries when we saw coach Bylsma’s system?), or what. I’m willing to write this off as an off night. They were due for one of those, anyway. This doesn’t hurt our playoff chances TOO much. We still have a few more games where we can clinch. I’m sure this isn’t a long term problem, but it I can’t shake that thought. Maybe I’m just a pessimist. We’ll see.

No one can deny that we deserved that win. In fact, it’s probably a shame that we gave up a point to Florida. 50-21 shots is a huge advantage that came from almost constant pressure throughout the game. The only thing that kept this one from getting out of hand was Vokoun. He had a huge game for the Panthers. I think we could have capitalized on a few more shots if we got bodies in front of the net (especially on the power play), but if we can get 40-50 shots on goal in a game I’ll take whatever I can get. Fleury let go of a lot of rebounds (a LOT of rebounds) and that may come back to haunt us later. But, overall, a dominating performance that’s hard to find fault with.
Nice win. We started out a little off balance in my opinion. Lots of bad passes and trouble corralling the puck. But we unloaded in the third and that’s what counts. Fleury continues to play well. Just a big win in general. Lets do it again next week when they come for the return trip.
By the way, who would have thought we’d be talking about big games against Florida at this point in the year? Obviously not Panthers fans. They still don’t believe it as evidenced by the number of fans dressed as ugly turquoise seats. Embarrassing.
