Another short 2-game series, another sweep. The Bucco season is getting ugly quick. I think we’re going to need to have to put the Pirates bats on a milk carton or something. They haven’t been seen in days. Frustrating stuff. Zach Duke again failed to make it 6 innings in game one. We haven’t had back to back quality starts in weeks. But the story was the 6-31 night the Pirate hitters had. It was disgusting. And it wasn’t a Cy Young guy that did it to us, either. The starter was Mitchell Boggs who didn’t even go 5 innings. He gave up both runs, 5 of the six hits, and sat down one out into the 5th. Then the Cardinal bullpen proceeded to just about no-hit us.
Same story in game 2. Ross Ohlendorf went 6 innings, but gave up 5 runs in the process. That’s not insurmountable, but when your hitters are going 4-30 it is. Once again, the Cardinal bullpen shut us out. Frustrating, I know. Andy Van Slyke (one of the Pirates from back in the early 90’s when we could win) once said “Every season has its peaks and valleys.
What you have to try to do is eliminate the Grand Canyon.” Well, we’re in a Grand Canyon and a half right now, and we have to get out before it’s too late.
